Truth-Telling: Why I’m Not Enough to Talk with You about Money

Like the rest of the world, I am mourning the loss of Maya Angelou.

Like many of us, as I read her biography, I am reminded of something that was very rarely shared: Maya Angelou started life as a prostitute and Madame in a brothel.

She never hid this information; in fact, she went to lengths to include it in her writing. However, it was often covered over, hidden by those who wanted to “pretty up” the truth. This was done with the best of intentions from the belief her past would somehow invalidate the amazing work she was doing in the present. They were afraid we would judge her.

Yet, her past was an integral part of the source she drew upon for every later piece of work. She could not have written I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and her other extraordinary works without fully claiming her entire history.

This is what so many of us — we heart and soul centered beings — are afraid to do when we go into business.

We are the wounded healers, the ones who have walked our own difficult journeys and have said, “I never want anyone to suffer the way I have.” Yet, we hide our wounding. We hide our secrets.

Why?

Because we are afraid of being judged. We are afraid the very “thing” that creates the juice for what we want to bring to the world will be our ultimate downfall. However, when we hide our secrets, we end up using so much energy to hide that we never allow ourselves to step fully into the light.

I’ve had a small voice in the back of my head for the last few months telling me the reason I’m experiencing a slower than usual stream of business lately is because I’m putting too much energy towards my own secret.

I have so much to share with you all. I’ve been spending the last three months in connection with the Soul Language grid and hearing from each language the special talent and the typical blocks that the language carries in regards to money.

It has been life changing for me and I’m hearing wonderful responses from those who I’ve shared the information with. However, I’m dragging my heels on getting the information out to the rest of the world.

I made it about something external — my oldest daughter is home from college. My husband has been traveling an insane amount. Ya da, ya da, ya da.

Excuses. Every. Last. One.

I’m terrified to put out the most important work I’ve done related to money because I’m scared. I’m scared I’m not enough because of the secret I’ve been carrying in regards to my own history with money.

And it’s time to let it out.

I’ve ridden the rollercoaster with money. In the space of five years I went from being told by our financial advisor that if we simply stayed with the way we were saving and investing, we’d have more than enough money to do anything we wanted… to bankruptcy.

There’s the nasty little secret. Who the #$#^ am I to talk about money if I have a history of bankruptcy? I can’t tell you the number of people I’ve spoken to who have horrible, horrible things to say about “people like me.” And for the longest time, I believed them because they were simply echoing what I thought about myself.

I could give you all the reasons — my husband’s two extensive layoffs, completely draining our 401Ks before asking for help, surgeries, and medical testing without insurance — but those aren’t the real reasons for the bankruptcy.

The real reason? At that time, I had a completely unconscious relationship with money. I never wanted anyone to love me for my money; I wanted to be loved for who I was first. So I pushed money away (this, by the way, is a typical block for those people carrying the Soul Language of Capitalist, which I do).

As I have healed my story, I have learned how to heal my relationship with money. I have learned to have a conscious, loving relationship with money. Better said, I am continuing to learn on a daily basis how to be in an even more conscious, loving relationship with money.

Could I have made different (better) choices, so I wouldn’t have had to go through bankruptcy? Absolutely. Does it mean I’m not enough to talk with others about money? Absolutely not.

I now know and fully accept this experience as part of my core work, so I can be more fully of service to the world. The last part of this for me is to share it. I don’t think all secrets need to be shared quite so publicly, but this was what was right for me.

What secrets are you harboring that pull your energy away from the work you are meant to do on the planet? What secrets are you using as your excuse to stay small for fear of judgment?

When you allow yourself full acceptance of who you are today, and who you have been in the past, you are now living wide open, from that place of complete connection to your own divinity, purpose, and mission on this planet. Get ready for the fireworks!

Will you be judged? Perhaps. I’m certain I’ll lose a few “followers” by sharing my secret. Yet, I can feel my heart wide open, I can feel the lightness which surrounds me and I know the best is yet to come.

Won’t you join me here in the light?

HGTV and Releasing Judgment

I am an HGTV junkie. Seriously. Property Brothers. Love it or List it. House Hunters. Income Property. The only way to stop the addiction is to turn the TV off before the next episode has a chance to start.

Over the last several weeks, one of the programs (Love it or List it) has turned the tables a bit and has taken on their own cast members for house renovations. If you aren’t a junkie like me, the premise of this show is that a designer and a realtor team up. The designer does a remodel of your existing home, the realtor finds you a new home. At the end, the participants decide to “love” their new home or “list” it.

In a bit of a twist, the show took on the homes of one of the team’s designers and contractors.

I was floored. Their homes were in terrible shape.

This sense of amazement didn’t come as a result of a judgment of how they lived, but rather from the fact that these people are on TV all the time, helping other people create homes of their dreams, while their own homes are nothing like what they want.

I suppose I could go off on the tangent of how false TV personalities are — but that is not at all what came up for me.

Instead, what struck me was these people do beautiful work. They create dream homes for people all the time, despite what they’ve done (or haven’t done) for themselves. The results are evident. They know their gifts and use them even when their own lives aren’t perfect.

How many times have you held yourself back from giving your gifts to the world because your life isn’t perfect? How much shame are you holding onto that your internal house isn’t in divine order?

What if you could let this go? How much more energy, focus, and ability would you have?

Building Your Sacred Container So You Build a Business That Works With Your Life

How intentional are you about the sacred container that is your business? Meaning, how intentional are you about the very foundation of your business?

From an energetic perspective, your sacred container is the heartbeat of your business. The container will bring you business experiences: clients, contracts, JV partnerships, money, etc. Because of this, you want to be super intentional about how you create your container, so what comes your way is in alignment with how you want to live your day to day life.

Let me give you an example.

When I first started my business, I was very clear the container of my business must support my value of family first. I also knew my business was based on integrity, truth, and respect. And, my business has brought me experiences that reflect these “walls.”

Over the last six months or so, I’ve begun to notice that while those “walls” of my buisness’ sacred container are still in place and are still important, I’ve evolved into a place where I am ready to be more specific.

I’ve deepened my connection to Source, deepened my absolute knowing there is more than enough for me, as well as the rest of the world, and I am more than enough to deserve to receive that ‘enoughness.’ My trust in the Universe is at such a different place than it was even a year ago.

Just as a flowerbed needs new dirt and regular water, a business’ sacred container requires regular upkeep. What I noticed about my own sacred container was that I had gotten a little “lazy” about my intentions (no judgment, just observation). I hadn’t shifted my daily practices to make sure I was including all of this transformation within my sacred container.

Now that I have this awareness, I’m ready to begin creating my new sacred container and excited to see where this leads.

How specific are you with your intentions for the sacred container of your business?

What Role Do You Give Your Money?

As you begin to align with prosperity, one of the most important questions you can ask yourself is:

What role do I assign to money?

At its very basic level, money gives you the ability to purchase items. Items for comfort, security, fun.

But very few of us actually keep money at its most basic. We’ve given money an incredible number of roles in our lives. Money is tangled up with success, security, power, respect, and personal worthiness.

To begin to see the various roles you’ve give money in your life, here are a few questions.

  • Can your business be a success without making money?
  • Do people with money have more power? More respect?
  • Does money give you security?
  • Do you feel better about yourself when you consistently have money in the bank?

The more tangled the roles, the more resistance creeps in. For example, if you hold a belief that powerful people have money, but hold a disdain for powerful people, why would your subconscious want to create the situation where you can be powerful?

If you need your business to create a lot of money in order to be a success, but you can’t feel like a success until you have money.

Take five minutes right now and ask yourself, “What role do I assign money?” Awareness is the first step to untangling the beliefs that will allow you to align with prosperity.

Is a Sumptuous Life a “Good Enough” Measure of Success?

Close your eyes and feel the word: sumptuous. Isn’t it a rich feeling?

Does it have any place in a definition of success? I would argue that it deserves to be front and center in anyone’s, especially heart and soul based people’s, definition of success.

When I listen to all of the guru’s out there shouting about six figure success, it simply leaves me dry and empty. Not because I’m not interested, not because money isn’t something that I desire, not because I’m not interested in what money will get for me, but rather because it is so one dimensional.

Not only that, but, focusing on the six figures leaves you wide open to base all your worth on how much money is coming in through your bank account, which is naturally going to ebb and flow. Focusing on six figures leaves you wide open to decide that you are less worthy because that idea you had didn’t resonate with your tribe the way you thought that it would. Leaves you wide open to making decisions purely based on money.

Again, money is part of our physical plane experience and we are meant to have as much as we require.

But, the current paradigm is that money is THE measure of success, the ONLY measure of success.

I don’t buy into that, and most heart and soul based people don’t (thankfully, they are helping to slowly shift this paradigm). However, this leaves us hanging a bit… what is the measure of success?

First, it’s personal to each of us.

Once you accept that, now you get to ask the question: “What is success for me?” As I’ve been playing with that question for myself, the word that came up is: sumptuous; rich in all ways.

While I am here on the planet, I want to live from my center, my soul connection. I want to offer my gifts and talents to the world as I lead from my center. As I do this, life and business become intertwined, each one supporting and playing off the other.

Life becomes rich with travel experiences, intellectual experiences, sensory experiences, heart experiences, love experiences, physical experiences, transformational experiences. These experiences are mine and those of my tribe. They are multi-dimensional and in complete integrity and authenticity with who I am as a Soul at all levels of Mind, Body, and Spirit. In a word: Sumptuous.

Success for me is a sumptuous life and business.

The beauty of this definition of success is that money reverts back to its original intention: a resource. Yes, money will be needed for many of these experiences. However, it is simply a tool, not a measure of success.

Another beautiful aspect of this definition of success is that giving and receiving are completely in balance. I take in joy and give it back out through the lens of my business, through the act of giving my gifts and talents. That act of giving draws from a very full well, which will only enhance my ability to give.

I stand fully in my desire for sumptuous living; excited about the juicy energy it creates and curious about where it leads.

Have You Made the Decision?

What is the difference to your business if you can make grounded decisions that lead you to sustainable prosperity? Huge, right?

So why do we sometimes have a hard time making a decision? As I was just reminded in my own business, sometimes the decision we think we are making isn’t really the decision we need to make.

Over the past several months, I’ve been working with my mentor to create language and the physical form of the next evolution of how I am bringing my gifts and talents out to the world. On top of the work I was already doing with her, I made an investment to do a special creative session; but I found I kept putting off scheduling.

That should have been a clue to me because typically once I decide to move ahead and invest in a session like this, I’m antsy to get it done quickly. But, it took me almost a month to schedule the session.

What I thought was the decision I was having difficulty with was — what is the form of what I want to create? Do I want to bring a service, a product, individual work, group work, or something different to life? I kept going round and round in my head and gave myself the reason that I didn’t want to “waste” my time with her by not having this basic answer.

But no. This wasn’t even close to the decision that was holding me hostage.

Finally, I realized the actual decision I was having difficulty making was: Am I ready to step out in much bigger way? Am I really ready to put my ideas and myself out there in a way that requires I trust the Divine?

While I will admit it took several days of absolute fear and falling apart to realize it, I finally knew what I needed to decide.

Once I knew what I had to decide, I could finally connect deeply with my Soul, which allowed me to set the fear to one side, so I could fully and completely make the decision that, yes, I am ready to show up in a new way. Now I could show up to my creative session and allow the physical form and other decisions to easily flow.

When you are having a hard time making a decision, get still. Get connected with the Divine, with your Soul, and ask the question: what is the decision beneath the decision I’m having trouble making? This will lead you to the point, so you can make a completely grounded decision, which will lead you toward sustainable prosperity.

Feeling Vulnerable?

As I was in meditation last week, I talked with my Soul team about the changes I’ve been noticing within myself. I’ve been noticing I’m finding it easier and easier to put myself, and my ideas, out into the world. But, even with the greater ease, there is still a period of time of vulnerability.

As I brought the topic up, the image they gave me was that of a crab. As a crab grows, she sheds the shell that has been her home and a new, roomier shell begins to harden. While the process is relatively fast, considering all that is going on, there are still several days while the outer shell is still soft and vulnerable.

As humans, we go through the same process of growth and expansion. Instead of shedding a hard protective skeleton, we shed old thoughts, old ways of seeing the world, and allow ourselves to grow into a more expanded version of ourselves.

Nothing speeds up this growth and expansion as running a business based on our gifts and talents. In fact running a purpose based business forces the growth and expansion like nothing else I’ve experienced. You HAVE to keep expanding or your business goes nowhere.

As much as we all want expanded businesses, the personal expansion isn’t always comfortable. As much as we all say we want the personal expansion, the time between shells, between belief structures, can be scary.

After all, even if the transfer is quick, there is that space of time where our underlying “skin” is exposed. That beautifully soft pink new born, vulnerable skin of the new “us” meets the air for the first time and it’s there for all the world to see.

What my team shared with me is those who are most successful have mastered the art of growing and changing their shells because they know they are safe in that transition. They know they are safe in transition because they understand at a deep level who they are.

In other words, they know their Inner Capital™: their Truths, their purpose, the truths of the Universe, their connection with Source, their inherent safety. These truths make the process of expansion less vulnerable and therefore, they are more willing to allow the process to unfold.

I’m still working with the depth of this message from Soul; amazing what rich information comes through when you open and allow the flow. If you are ready to allow a much roomier shell and the resulting expanded business, I invite you to take some quiet time to connect with the Divine, with your Soul team, and ask, “What do I get to release to have a more complete understanding of my own Inner Capital?”

The Intention That Will Change Your 2013

A couple of weeks ago, a friend and colleague of mine recommended a new resource to me for Flower Essences. From the moment I opened the webpage, I was absolutely enthralled and knew this was a business I would continue to have a relationship with for a very long time … and I wasn’t even a customer yet!

Later that evening, I was still thinking about this wonderful new resource and began asking the question, “Why am I so drawn in?” Is it simply because Flower Essences are what I need right now?

And yes, that was part of the answer.

However, the deeper answer was I could feel the woman who creates these Flower Essences is completely tapped in and living from her gifts. Every single word on her website and in her guide flows directly from who she is at a soul level.

Clearly, I am one of her tribe, one of her people; my whole system could tell from the moment of my first interaction.

Perhaps the reason this experience was so powerful for me is that I have been receiving so many messages from Source that the key to creating a prosperous, fertile business is to BE YOU; to fully embrace your gifts, and share them with the world without apology (or agenda).

This is terrifying for many of us and I do include myself here. However, as I have shared more and more of myself, as I have opened to using my soul given gifts, my business — the prosperity, the joy, the ease — has changed radically.

As you set your intentions, commitments, and resolutions for the upcoming year, I invite you to add one to the top of your list: Be Myself. Then do whatever it takes to put this intention into motion. Maybe it’s first learning about who you really are at a Soul Level. Or, it’s about clearing out fears of being judged if you show your true self. Or, maybe it’s improving your confidence and beliefs that there are people in the world who are waiting for you.

Do whatever you need to do — internally or externally — to make the commitment to be yourself in 2013. The part of the world that is your tribe is waiting for you.

The Key You’ve Been Searching For

How much time do you spend each month in your business looking for a new way to market yourself? That time may look like creating new programs, writing new web copy, engaging in social media (or simply thinking about doing any of these activities or berating yourself for not doing more)?

What I have noticed — in both my clients and in myself — is that we are willing to invest hours and hours and hours of external action. We are willing to invest that time because there is a part of us that still believes there is a magic key out there, which will open the door to connecting with those people we are on this planet to serve.

I am here to tell you there is a key. Maybe it’s even magic. Sure feels like magic. But it is NOT out there. The key is not a program, a tactic, a squeeze page, or a social media site.

The key is in you.

The key is being you. Actually, it is one level deeper than that: The key is being the Soul you. The key is bringing to the world all gifts and talents you came into this physical plane with, no holds barred.

Once we fully own our beautiful, brilliant, light, soul-selves, our magnetic wattage is turned on full force. Actually, I should say that differently: when we fully own our beautiful, brilliant, light, soul-selves, we remove the human-made barrier that covered up our natural magnetic wattage.

When the barrier is removed:

That’s when the best methods to becoming known to the people we are meant to serve show up.

That’s when the phone begins to ring before you’ve even put out an offer.

That’s when the people in your business are an absolute joy to create with.

That’s when business begins to flow in a sustainable way.

What internal or external action can you take today to fully own your beautiful, brilliant, light, soul-self?

Dark Night of the Soul Wisdom

At the end of 2011, I had a reading from a mentor of mine. Using Animal Medicine cards, she shared the theme of my upcoming year: Loyalty, specifically learning about loyalty as it relates to Source, to God.

I found this intriguing because over the last several years I have been deepening into my connection with Source and understanding at a body level how that connection feeds a prosperous business. So, I looked forward to the year and the concept unfolding for me.

Throughout the year, new information, new “knowings” have been unfolding right and left. My practice of connecting with the Divine has deepened and I really thought I was “getting it.”

Then it all, seemingly, fell apart. Over the last several months, I’ve been experiencing a Dark Night of the Soul; a down on my knees, palms up, pleading with the Infinite for answers and resolution kind of Dark Night.

The main question I noticed that I was asking was, “Why aren’t you hearing me? I’m following all the ‘rules’ of asking, of manifestation, why aren’t you sharing the abundance that I know is possible in life? Why are you taking away the areas where I’ve always had great abundance, like health?”

“#!^&! Where’s the loyalty?”

What I was really asking was, “Where are you?”

And what I heard was, “Where are you? When will you allow me in?”

Here is what I finally understood: God is as loyal as you allow her to be.

From the one year I spent in Religious Education in third grade, I created this picture of God as a man with a long white beard, full of judgment, someone you needed to prove yourself to, and who was waiting to hand out blessings IF you proved yourself.

In other words, God was in control. God made the decisions. My job was to wait. Wait and see if I was worthy. Wait and see if I would receive blessings.

This is not a picture that melds with my now understanding of Source and laws of the Universe. Yet, this was still in the background, affecting my relationship with Source Energy.

Source was loyal to this buried, background understanding. Source was so loyal that it responded to me exactly as I expected.

I was waiting. So Source was waiting.

I’m now seeing the places where I wasn’t allowing Source to work its magic, the places where I was steadfastly holding God out of my life because I needed it to show up differently, the places where I was waiting for God to act FIRST, so I could then make a decision that I was worthy of blessings.

What does this have to do with building a prosperous, fertile business?

When you are a heart-centered entrepreneur, deepening your connection with Source is the key to creating an authentic and prosperous business. You literally won’t do it any other way; no hard selling tactics, marketing pushiness, or over-the-top techniques are going to fly with you.

At the same time, you can try as many spiritual ‘tactics’ as you want — affirmations, visualizations and more — but if you are holding on to old beliefs about how to work with Source, you will only be frustrated in your attempts.

I know first hand.

Source is as loyal to you as you are to Source.

Are you willing to be loyal to Source?

Take a breath and ask yourself honestly, “Where am I? How am I allowing my connection to flow?”

What can you release, so Source’s loyalty reflects the desires of your heart and Spirit?
