The & # @ ! Will Hit the Fan and That’s Okay

Have you heard people refer to the “breakdown before the breakthrough”: that place of intense discomfort (and sometimes just plain old fear and despair) before reaching a new level of personal or business development?

But, what creates the breakdown?

Before the breakdown, there’s another step first: making a decision to leap forward. To take that next step in your business: writing that book, becoming a speaker, setting up a brand new healing practice, creating that new product.

When the decision first is made, wow, life feels really amazing and energizing.

And then all the parts of you that are more comfortable in the old way of life (yes, even if the old way of life is full of lack) start screaming and trying to sabotage all the action you are taking towards the new exciting step.

Sabotage can look like procrastination, family emergencies, relationship trouble, illness, accidents, unexpected expenses, technology breakdowns, indecision, other people telling you your ideas don’t have merit, and many, many, more.

If you don’t know what to do to get those objecting parts in alignment with your vision, they win, and you end up staying stuck and not making any forward progress.

Here’s another analogy: Picture placing a great big cooking pot over a blazing open fire and then walking away.

At first, the fire warms the water. Then it begins to softly boil. Then it becomes a rolling boil. Without any attention from you, it boils over and the fire goes out.

Making the decision about what you want lights a fire in your energy system and starts the energy flowing. The Universe listens and begins to send you all kinds of experiences that match this new vibrational reality you’ve created.

The conscious part of you that asked for these changes is ecstatic.

The unconscious parts of you that hold onto your old stories and beliefs start to panic. They start softly and eventually begin yelling. Those vibrations also reach the Universe and the Universe listens and begins to send experiences to match these vibrations.

This is the breakdown. The water reaching its boiling point. The proverbial &#$! hitting the fan.

If you pay more attention to the experiences sent from the old parts, their fear and worry continue to grow and eventually overwhelm and put out, so to speak, the vibration of the new energy.

When this comes up, recognize it for what it is. See the pain, the fear, or the discomfort as a sign you are on the right track, you are creating the necessary energy to fuel your vision.

Get curious about the sabotage, about what old beliefs are being revealed to you. Clear those old beliefs, stay in alignment with the vibration of the new vision, and you will take a huge leap forward in your business.

Sometimes you can do this on your own. Sometimes you need a partner. If you are tired of consistently starting the fire and asking for your business to leap forward, but somehow the fire always goes out before you can reap the rewards, connect with me. I’d love to help you put your gifts out into the world in a much bigger way.

The Secret to Getting to the Next Level of Your Business

Heart-based, spirit-based, purpose and passion based businesses are all built around helping other people in one form or another. And, for the most part, these kinds of businesses (including my business) are built out of a problem that you had yourself.

The only way to help others is to help yourself first. You don’t have to be embarrassed that you aren’t “as far along” as you’d like. You also don’t have to be perfect in order to help someone else.

However, if you want to keep moving your business forward, you absolutely must continue to heal the core problem you help others with, within yourself. No matter what level of business success you have achieved, the more clarity you have yourself, the better you’ll be able to help others.

For example:

  • If you coach people to write books, you must continue to heal your ability to express yourself.
  • If you are an artist, you must continue to clear your connection to and expression of your creativity.
  • If you coach people to follow their passion, you must allow yourself to deeply connect to your passion and be more and more comfortable being who you are and living from your passion.
  • If you help people reach prosperity, you must more deeply heal your relationship to and understanding of prosperity.

The clearer you become, the more effective you are in the work that you are here on this planet to share and the more attractive you are to your ideal client. As a result, you business grows.

You can take as many courses, attend as many workshops, participate in as many high-level coaching programs as you have funds in the bank, but if you aren’t doing your inner work, your success simply isn’t going to happen.

To get to the next level of business, you must bring yourself into internal alignment with that level first.

The easiest way to do this is by transforming the old thoughts, beliefs, memories, and other energetic patterns that keep you stuck right in your current pattern. Gaining clarity and healing deeply may feel intimidating; but with the right coach, this kind of healing unfolds beautifully and you get to step into the next level of doing the work you love.

How does that sound?

Don’t Waste High Level Coaching

Have you ever wondered why some programs, products, and coaching work for some people and they don’t for others?

How many Internet marketing products have you purchased, only to see your business stay the same?

How many coaching programs have you participated in only to stay stuck in the same place?

How many “workshop in a box” products have you purchased, only to find the final measureable result is a decrease in your bank account?

Don’t get me wrong: growing your knowledge and understanding of business structure and tactics is key to creating a profitable business.

However, there is no product created, no mastermind available, no mentor good enough to wave a magic wand and create results for you if your internal programming, your underlying beliefs are standing in unconscious opposition.

I’ve been seeing an alarming trend in high level coaches who at this point tend to blame the client: they just aren’t motivated enough, they just aren’t clear enough, they just aren’t committed enough, they must want a hobby and not a “real” business.

I feel this is completely missing the point: this is a standard stage of growing a heart centered, purpose based business. Expect it. Rejoice in it because it means you are getting really close to what you want.

The answer isn’t that you just need to power through the fear. The answer isn’t that you are a failure. The answer isn’t that you shouldn’t have signed up for their program.

The answer is: you need to bring your internal programming into alignment with what you want to create.

Each of us carries personal responsibility for moving ourselves forward; to begin to recognize when we are stuck in a whirlpool of negative feelings / stagnation due to our internal programming, and then take the steps to get re-aligned; take the steps to transform the underlying beliefs that hold us back.

If you find you aren’t getting the results you want from high level coaching or other types of programs, it is time to stop and get really curious and ask yourself: what are the underlying pieces of my programming that are holding me in place?

Take the steps. Get help if you need to; this is often when an external guide can be really helpful.

When you take these steps, you’ll find clarity, drive, and inspired actions come without any effort. You will be well on your way to creating your fertile business.

Self-Compassion for Business Success

One of the primary messages I heard from my family growing up was to work hard for what I wanted; or another variation, “nothing comes without hard work.”

While I completely agree there is no way to have a business without putting in time and effort, the underlying message to “work hard or else” simply backfires energetically.

Making working hard the focus generally means a lot of harsh self-talk. It means a lot of striving and pushing and effort. None of this is conducive to the soft, open, joyful, relaxed nature that connects you with the deep part of yourself, the part connected with Source.

From that soft, open, joyful place, so much more is possible.

The Universe has been quick to remind me of this in so many ways over the last few weeks. During an energy session, the practitioner shared the message “Be Kind to Yourself.”

Pulling cards from the beautiful “Path of the Soul” Destiny Cards, I kept receiving Quan Yin. According to their guidebook, Quan Yin is the Bodhisattva of Compassion and she represents the compassion and kindness towards oneself.

You know how when you hear something multiple times in multiple places, it’s time to pay attention?

So I’ve begun to recommit myself to paying attention to self-compassion, to kindness towards myself. I’ve made difficult choices to say no to some opportunities. I chose to go to an activity that I really wanted to do even though my mind told me I needed to stay home and work.

I’ve allowed myself to step into compassion for who I am right now.

And, as usual, when I reopen to that beautiful flow of Source all things change. Writing new web copy becomes a breeze. Ideas download without effort. Solutions to problems come seemingly from out of thin air.

Where can you begin to create self-compassion for yourself, right here, right now? Imagine what could shift in your business with this idea as your primary focus.

Do It, or Don’t Do It, Just Don’t Do Both!

I love the work I do — truly. However, if I were to follow my deepest secret longing, I’d be in musical theater.

Think Patti LuPone as Evita, or Heather Headley belting out her Tony winning performance in Elton John’s Aida.

If I’m really honest: Christina Aguilera (complete with pearl strand costume) singing “Guy What Takes His Time” in Burlesque.

One thing I know for sure is that to create these kinds of performances, these women had to go full out. No halfway. No feeling bashful. They each dug deep within their hearts and souls, became the character, believed in the character, and then the performance just flowed.

I could tell they were heart connected because there was no overacting that left me cringing. No head-only based performance that left the performance seeming as if it were simply a series of notes that would soon be forgotten.

The same is true for any business owner running a heart based, purpose based business. You just can’t do it halfway. You have to plug deep into your heart and your soul, become the work, believe in the work, and then let your words flow.

However, we don’t always recognize when we are only going halfway. We think we’re putting ourselves out there fully, when really we’re either over-acting or acting from our heads.

Here are some symptoms of running your business halfway:

  • Not wanting to find your niche; feeling like you have to serve everybody.
  • Worrying more about what your non-authentic clients will think of your message than your authentic clients. In other words, worrying what others think of the work you are putting out there and watering down your message to appeal to everyone instead of the people you are really meant to serve.
  • Blasting your message over and over, and over, needing people to connect with you.
  • Focusing only on the money. Operating from a place of needing money.
  • Needing to have a full calendar / particular amount of income, etc., before you feel worthy of saying you are good at what you do.

In working with my clients — and from my own personal experiences — we run halfway when we carry negative beliefs about what it means to be successful. Or what it means about you to truly stand up and believe fully in your work.

Clearing these underlying beliefs lets you fully and completely step into your heart, align with your Soul’s work, and help all the people you are meant to help and connect with in your business.

Get out of your own way. Step fully and confidently into who you are and let the world see you as you are, in your full, connected glory.

Now that may not be a musical theater number, but this is the work that makes my heart and soul sing!

What is Your Soul Longing For?

The Invitation

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life’s betrayals or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain. I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic, to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself; if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul; if you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see beauty, even when it’s not pretty, every day, and if you can source your own life from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, ‘Yes!’

It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up, after the night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done to feed the children.

It doesn’t interest me who you know or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you, from the inside, when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.
