Does Money Spark Joy?
Have you ever had the experience of a process, a book title, or a program keep popping up for you?
The first time I heard about Marie Kondo’s book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing” was last year. The title showed up again as I listened to a podcast last month. I was intrigued each time. But, then I was shopping over the weekend in my new favorite paper goods store and there it was, a place I least expected it. So of course it had to come home with me.
I will be the first to say that I am not the best housekeeper; simply isn’t my “thing.” But Kondo’s approach to organization is different than any other approach I’ve read about.
In a nutshell, her approach is this: take one category of items in your home (like clothing), gather ALL of those items from ALL of the rooms of your home, pile them on the floor and then ask one very important question item by item.
“Does this spark joy?”
If it does, keep it. If it doesn’t, don’t.
Now that I am beginning to apply this approach, I’m actually astounded by what I have been keeping around me that doesn’t spark joy.
As I was doing the mundane work of gathering all my items it occurred to me that we could ask this question of all aspects of our life:
Does this relationship spark joy?
Does this city I’m living in spark joy?
Does the food I’m eating spark joy?
And then a deeper ah-ha: Does money spark joy?
I’m not talking about the studies that ask the question whether money makes you happy or not.
I’m asking you: Does physical money spark joy for you?
Think about having a pile of money all around you. What are the first emotions that come up? Joy? Fun? Delight? Curiosity?
Or does it spark feelings of guilt? General ickiness? Worry? Distress?
If you have a general distaste for physical money, if it creates an underlying sense of, “I don’t want this anywhere near me,” then how will you ever allow it into your daily life?
What are you ready to tidy up in regards to your feelings about physical money?
