The Myth of Action

I had a really fun surprise a couple of days ago. Taking advantage of a ‘lost’ hour waiting for our daughters to finish piano lessons, my husband and I took a quick walk at a park here in town that we don’t often visit.

Earlier this summer, our local Park and Rec department installed new maps in all community parks showing the available trails. These maps are not just ‘drawn to scale’ diagrams, but they are aerial maps of the whole park. When we arrived at the park we were simply intent on getting into the walk, so we quickly looked for the trail we could accomplish in our allotted time.

However, at the end of the walk, we had a few extra minutes before needing to leave to pick up the girls, so we spent a little time looking at the rest of the map. That’s when I discovered my fun surprise.

Over on the border of the map I noticed an odd-looking shape which was actually outside the boundary of the park, but still showed up on the aerial map. As I looked closer, I got excited. This wasn’t just an odd looking shape, it was a labyrinth; a large labyrinth.

Walking a labyrinth is one of my favorite tools for inspiration, unknotting difficult challenges, or simply connecting directly with Source. Up until finding this new labyrinth (which turned out to be on the grounds of a Church and open to the public!), the closest one to me was a 30-minute drive away, not particularly conducive to regular use. What a find!

It couldn’t have come at a better time.

Honestly, I have a lot of new information, new tools, and new programs that I am SO anxious to incorporate into the services that I offer to clients. And yet, each time I get ready to write an e-mail announcing a new service, something deep within me says, “it’s not time.” I tell you, it’s getting a little frustrating.

Action is so seductive. Action can make you feel in control, provide a sense of security, as if with just enough pushing and shoving, you can MAKE the external world conform.

But, when you get so caught up in needing to be in action in your business, you don’t take the time to listen to your deeper intuition. You don’t take the time to allow something new to gestate, to be fully complete. You end up offering something that doesn’t resonate with your authentic client. And when you do that, the offer fails. The product launch fails.

Or, even worse, you create the product or the offer and it is a success; only later you discover that it doesn’t completely meet all of your values. Perhaps it creates a huge drain on your time or isn’t a full representation of who you are or what service you can provide.

When you allow yourself to stop all action and get quiet, that’s when you have access to the hidden gems, the deeper intuition that can change your whole perspective.

The underlying metaphor of finding a labyrinth, once I stopped to really look at the whole map of the park, isn’t lost on me. Nor is the fact that I was given exactly what I needed when I took the time to be open.

I won’t lie, I would rather have received the message “it’s time to act!” But, in my experience, when I follow the wisdom of Source instead of pushing myself into action, what ends up unfolding is more amazing than I ever could have dreamed.

Today, I invite you to step out of action, to step out of using your mind to figure out “what’s next” and instead, tap into your deeper intuition with the following imagery exercise.

Close your eyes and take several deep breaths. Imagine for a moment you are standing on a topographical map of your business. Your map may be full of images, words, or symbols. Simply allow whatever image speaks to you, to come to mind. You don’t even have to know what that means to you right now, just allow it to form.

First, notice where you are on your map. What’s around you? What’s pulling you? What do you hear? What do you see? What do you feel like needs to be done?

And now you notice you are beginning to be lifted up until you find yourself gently floating over the top of your map. From this view, what do you notice? What draws your attention? What paths are highlighted? What gems are ‘hidden’ in plain sight now that you have this view?
